Snoring problems

Why do people snore?

Snoring is not related to your gender, age or oral hygiene, it’s a completely normal phenomenon that the majority of people do.

When we sleep, our muscles relax. For some people, this relaxation causes the tongue to fall back and obstruct the passage of air. Sensing a diminished quantity of air entering, our body adapts by accelerating the process which leads to the vibration of tissues in the throat (the palate, the tonsils, the uvula etc.). This is the vibration that causes snoring.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a different problem than regular snoring. For certain people, there is a complete obstruction of the pharynx during sleep, air cannot pass through. This blockage provokes respiratory failure which is called sleep apnea. This phenomenon can last up to 10 seconds each time and can repeat itself dozens and even hundreds of times per night.

This sleeping disorder must not be taken lightly. It provokes a reduction of oxygen in the blood and can lead to the following serious short-term and long-term consequences: hypertension, diabetes, depression, cardiovascular diseases, intense fatigue, drowsiness, libido problems, and can even cause a stroke.
